Fresh Local Wild

Location : W. Hastings & Burrard Street

This is the cart I was very enthusiastically told about when visiting their smaller enterprise, Sausage a Trois. Also, this cart used to be at a different location, which they sold to another vendor. (I haven't visited this one yet). This is probably the most unique cart in Vancouver so far as it has a seating area, a small wooden bench and table that is integrated into the truck. It was reserved when we visited. Reserved, what's that about? We had to sit on a step, luckily in sunshine, the whole time watching no-one turn up for their 'reservation'. This cart boasts a chef who likes to catch produce and hunt himself and everything is just as the name suggests. Being big on sustainability is turning into a necessity in this city rather than an option, (which can only be a good thing).

Neil and I shared fish and chips which was salmon. It looked a picture as little bits of the pink - orange flesh poked through the crisp batter. It tasted much better than when we originally had it at their other location. This time, the fries were nicely golden and crisp and the fish was succulent without being slimy and two big dollops of tartare sauce were a nice tangy accompaniment. It cost $13.44. I know salmon especially is not a cheap fish and these carts are not supposed to be a 'cheap' lunch option, being ran by passionate chefs that have worked in some of the finest restaurants in the city, but it still seems a little on the pricey side. I would visit this kind of place again occasionally, but my two lunch partners both decreed it was just too much. However......

Frank probably had the best value food cart option in the entire city. For $3 he had a tray of chips (fries), so highly piled we only managed to eat about 1/3 of them between the three of us. Frank felt so guilty about not being able to finish them, we all had to walk around the corner so he could throw them away discreetly. He wanted to give them to a homeless person, but there's never one around when you need one.
