Slingers & Sausage a'trois

Slingers
W. Broadway & Granville
We actually caught this truck while it was at a different location, so double check where it is if you're interested using this amazing link. Scroll down and click on the name to get all the cart's locations day by day.
I apologize to Slingers because neither Neil nor myself ordered anything. Neil yet again moaned about the prices. They were not so bad compared to others but the truth is he didn't actually find the menu that appealing. The main focus is sandwiches and pastas, which were a little carb heavy for me. A small taco is one thing but a plate of pasta or a huge piece of bread is just too much. Looking at the menu a second time, however, leaves me wondering why Neil didn't try the sandwich, which consists of a breaded piece of chicken or veal, topped with marinara sauce, mozzarella and more. At $7.99 the vendors claim it is the biggest sandwich in town. Maybe next time we'll give them a chance.

Sausage a'trois

Even though I am not a huge hot dog fan, this cart was interesting because of several things. Firstly (and probably most importantly), the sausages were good. Secondly, the owner kindly cut mine into pieces as I didn't want to eat the bun, very helpfully giving me a 'bread plate' and making a mental note to himself to pick up some plastic forks and trays for next time, and lastly, he chatted away to us pleasantly revealing lots of exciting news about the up and coming cart scene.

Pointing to the guy sitting out of the rain behind him, he explained that he used to be executive chef of Coast, (a very smart restaurant), but was now about to start a new venture. He showed us an image of the new cart on his phone and immediately the word 'cart' lost any validity. More like a huge behemoth truck, the new venture will have heating, seating areas and will be composed from stainless steel to blend effortlessly into the surrounding urban environment. Called Fresh Local Wild, it is a remodelled version of their smaller enterprise last year, which they sold to another hopeful who renamed it 'The Kaboom Box". It should be open in a few weeks and will be impossible to miss. More info as it happens. Click here

Sausage a'trios, I'm guessing, is their smaller fill-in business, but it's no less impressive, even for its diminutive size. Three sausages are offered, (as the cheeky name would suggest),  although when we arrived the choice was only Bratwurst or Cheddar Jalapeno. We chose the latter and smothered them with some onions, sauerkraut and hot mustard, (the usual dog fare). What wasn't usual was the smoking with apple wood chips that the sausages had been subjected to for an hour. Meaty, smoky and very tasty, especially with enough mustard to make you eyes sting, they were great and $5 each. That's right, Neil had a smile on his funny little face, (he's pondering the menu in the photo, however).  We look forward to their new venture and this one's worth checking out too.

As a post script, Neil once again, wants his voice to be heard. He would like to let everyone associated with carts know that after his hot dog he was still hungry so he bought a Mama burger (big girl that he is), from A&W. It cost $1.68 and helped to fill him up and was delicious. He has a point, I'm sure.. I just don't necessarily agree.
