Granville Street between Dunsmuir and W Georgia
This cart has been around for years as Vancouver's previously archaic system allowed the sale of hot dogs or roasted chestnuts only. It deserves a mention because not only was the choice very good, the girl who was serving was really friendly but also because all the food is organic, natural and with no gluten, nitrate, lactose, growth hormones or filler. Not your usual hot dog stand.
We chose one of the speciality items, a lamb smokie which we topped with homemade cucumber and corn relishes and some Dijonaisse mustard. Neil ate most of the dog as I am not a huge fan of these kinds of sausages, preferring the denser, meatier kind than the sponginess of most smokies, but I did take a few bites in the name of research. At first we thought the lamb was lost amongst the other flavours but Neil said it was definitely discernible after he had finished.
What is particularly good about this stand is the location they have been given. Right outside a sky train station with hungry revellers and work commuters constantly coming and going from a very busy station in the Downtown core. Yesterday, however, was Vancouver's annual 4/20 pot smoking festival where everyone congregates to outside the Art Gallery to get high. Most of the city was crowded with 16 year olds wearing the same grungy clothes and hound dog eyes, off school on their Spring Break and ready to get wasted. If this stand was still open a few hours after 20 past 4 and well into the evening, I'm sure they did a roaring trade!
