Eli's Serious Sausage

Usually Beatty Street @ Dunsmuir Street
(Also look for them at farmers' markets on Saturdays).

Currywurst is a particularly popular snack in Germany composed of a pork sausage topped with a sauce made by combining ketchup and curry powder and then sprinkled with more curry powder. There is a choice between eating it with a bun like a hot dog, or more traditionally, cut into chunks and eaten with a fork. The curry flavour is very familiar to anyone who has eaten those dubious curries that come from a tin or are created with a powder or jar of sauce and garnished with apples and sultanas. This doesn't make it any less appealing, more so if anything because of it's comforting familiarity. Similar to the curry and chips you can get at certain 'Irish' bars around Vancouver, when you close your eyes and say "Ah, that's it. That's what I remember".

There are other options on the menu including Bratwurst and a plethora of condiments to choose from, all home made, including sauerkraut, chutneys and pickles. Disappointingly we didn't get to try any as the smart bow-tied servers told us currywurst doesn't need and extra toppings, in fact, anything else would spoil the effect. The sausages are dense and meaty, more like a real sausage than a wiener, (in my opinion) and the two guys are so pleasant and helpful, it elevates this food cart from mere hot dog stand to something altogether more gourmet.
